2009 campaign sets record

The 2009 United Way Campaign Celebration Dinner began in much the same way as every other year's dinner. Close to 2,000 United Way staff, community workers, corporate sponsors and volunteers gathered to honour their efforts and celebrate their shared values.

In his introduction, Matt Galloway—host on CBC Radio One and the emcee—began the evening this way, "We've all heard Frances say this before—we can only make a difference in the lives of others if we work together."

Alnasir Samji, Chair of United Way's Board of Trustees, reminded people of these accomplishments. He said, "We built on the momentum of our Neighbourhood Strategy. Just two days ago we officially opened our first Community Hub—a central place for residents of Mid-Scarborough to access vital social supports they need."

United Way Toronto President and CEO, Frances Lankin's keynote address commended the efforts of those who did their part—climb, run, volunteer and dig deeper. She expressed her gratitude by saying, "In many respects our community faced the worst. But we also saw the best in our city, and especially the best in each and every one of you."

She reserved special praise for Bill Downe, United Way 2009 Campaign Cabinet Chair. He worked tirelessly on many fronts. He took the message of need to heart, and to every corner of the city. In his speech, Bill recalled the generous response from Toronto. But he challenged everyone to continue to tackle root causes in our troubled neighbourhoods. In thanks, he echoed Frances' words: "You did this. You answered the call."

As the Spirit Awards winners' accomplishments were announced—each one exceeding its campaign goal—it became clear that Toronto went "above and beyond". In addition, in a letter to Frances Lankin, Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way Worldwide, said that the GTA campaign was the single largest in North America. The $109,000,000 raised was a record for United Way Toronto. Indeed, Toronto does rock.
