United Way Toronto Names New President and CEO

Susan McIsaac will succeed Frances Lankin September 1, 2010

TORONTOSusan McIsaac will be United Way Toronto's next President and CEO, succeeding outgoing head Frances Lankin. The announcement by Alnasir Samji, Chair of United Way's Board of Trustees, was made today at the charity's annual general meeting and follows Lankin's notice in February that she will step down this year.

"A professional career spanning two decades in the non-profit sector, and a 12-year veteran of United Way, Susan is one of the key architects of United Way Toronto's bold transformation from trusted fundraiser to a leading catalyst of community change," said Samji. "Her leadership has long been critical to our success and the Board's very strong confidence in her experience and understanding of today's United Way led to an enthusiastic and unequivocal decision."

In the wake of Lankin's plan to leave United Way, the search for a new CEO began immediately in March. The search included a two phase process that involved wide community consultation with over 100 external stakeholders, the development of an ideal candidate profile and outline of current challenges and opportunities, and interviews of a short list of individuals identified from over 70 potential candidates.

The final phase of the search process ended late last week. "United Way's potential to affect deep and profound change in the community makes the decision regarding who leads the organization a very important one; and we took the responsibility for the future of United Way very seriously," said Samji. "The calibre and reputation of the people we interviewed was outstanding, and it's a testament to the success of United Way that we attract the interest of some of our country's most talented citizens. We are very gratified knowing the stewardship of one of our city's great institutions will remain in talented and confident hands."

Samji said McIsaac will assume her new role September 1; to ensure a smooth handoff, Lankin has agreed to provide transition support to the organization until February 2011.

"There's no greater privilege than being given an opportunity to lead an organization like this United Way," said McIsaac. "It's a chance to really move the needle on social conditions, to make a real difference in the communities of our city. And I fully intend to build on the incredible, solid foundation that Frances has built for all of us."

"Susan is a skilled servant leader who models the best of our community values," said Lankin. "I can think of no one better to lead this precious community resource and it's just incredibly exciting to know she'll be at the helm."

Established in 1956, United Way Toronto is a charity working to advance the common good and create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our city.
