As 2009 Campaign Chair, Downe has visited over a dozen United Way member agencies, meeting many people in need who benefit from your donations and witnessing the gap between priveledge and those struggling in our community. When you support United Way, you make a real difference in people's lives every day, helping to meet urgent needs at a time when people need it most.

Message from the 2009 Campaign Chair, Bill Downe

On January 21, 2010, many supporters joined to celebrate the conclusion of United Way's 2009 campaign. Given the headlines over the last 18 months, the success of the campaign was significant—and it was a privilege to be able to take part in what was in fact a celebration of people and our city. The $109,000,000 raised was the result of a significant effort—one that will sustain the city and create a better future for families, neighbourhoods and newcomers. This success belongs to volunteers, donors and leaders from across Toronto.

From the start, we had the benefit of the generosity and support of many. The United Way Campaign Cabinet set the tone and was instrumental in soliciting giving at all levels. Account executives and sponsored employees took the cause to organizations across the city to secure corporate donations and support employee campaigns. Their personal involvement touched the leadership chairs, employee chairs and volunteers, inspiring them to go farther.

My final words of thanks go out to the thousands of donors across Toronto. To you, I extend my sincerest gratitude. Thank you on behalf of the many community volunteers who work within our network of agencies. You saw the need and understood that hope alone would not change the circumstances.

Like all of us, I look forward with optimism to a stronger 2010. Our perseverance through 2009 is a badge of honour we can all wear proudly.

Thank you.
