Newcomer Grant

The Newcomer Grants Program was initiated in 1999 in order to respond to service gaps, improve newcomers’ access to culturally appropriate community services, and address growing demand for services supporting newcomers. The Program focuses on funding access to services, innovative service delivery and strategies to improve service coordination between newcomer-serving agencies.

In late 2005, United Way staff completed a review of the Program in order to examine its outcomes and impact. A number of enhancements were introduced in 2006 as a result of the review, including increasing the maximum grant amount available to $50,000 annually, offering both short-term (6 to 12 months) and multi-year (2 years) grants, and offering developmental supports to new and emerging organizations during the application process and project implementation. In 2006, United Way was pleased to allocate $400,000 through the Newcomer Grants Program to 16 agencies, including six member agencies and 10 non-member agencies. This is in addition to the $9 million in annual funding allocated to member agencies for programs serving newcomers.

Due to offering 2-year grants, we have already committed the majority of funds designated by United Way for the Newcomer Grant Program for the 2007-2008 granting year. As such, United Way has decided to not hold an open call for applications to the Program in 2007-2008. Instead, we will focus our efforts and resources this year on funding a few initiatives from last year’s applicants that were not funded due to a lack of resources. The Newcomer Grant Program will also be holding an exciting series of learning sessions for the 2006 grant recipients that focus on capacity building, program sustainability, program evaluation and supporting a process of developing a peer-to-peer learning community.
